In John chapter 6, many of Jesus’ disciples were troubled by his teaching. They said, “This speech is shocking; who can listen to it?” Some stopped following him. Jesus then asked the Twelve, “You do not want to go also, do you?”
Peter answered: “Lord, whom shall we go away to? You have sayings of everlasting life. We have believed and have come to know that you are the Holy One of God.” The Watchtower organization turns his words into a rallying cry of loyalty to the governing body.
But is that what Peter meant?
Peter did not say, “To which human governing authority shall we go?” He said, “Lord, whom shall we go to?” The object of his faith was Jesus Christ himself.
