An Attack on Religious Freedom?

On March 4, 2024, the Oslo District Court upheld the Norwegian government’s decision to revoke the legal registration of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Norway. However, Jehovah’s Witnesses are not banned as a religion. They are still allowed to have meetings and share in their public ministry as always. The removal of registration only affects two things. Their right to receive financial aid from the government and for married couples to have an elder officiate at their weddings. This doesn’t mean that they cannot get married. It just means that without a civil ceremony the marriage will not be legally recognized. But since they are not banned and are only seeking to get grant money from the government, how is this an unprecedented attack on religious freedom?
