1914 Examining Doctrines

Types and Anti-types – 1914

At the October 2014 Annual Meeting of Jehovah’s Witnesses, David Splane, member of the governing body, gave a talk entitled “Types and Anti-types”. In his closing remarks he stated:

We deeply appreciate the spiritual heritage that was passed on to us by the early Bible Students. In harmony with Zechariah chapter 4 and verse 10: “We do not despise the day of small things.” However the light does get brighter. And we feel that we must follow the light, wherever it leads us. Our love should be for the truth and not for a particular doctrine or teaching.

Well how would you sum up this talk in a few words? The wrong answer is, “We don’t believe in types and anti-types anymore.” We do! We certainly do. Where the scriptures identify them as such, we embrace them. But where the Bible is silent, we must be silent.” David Splane

This article examines what is perhaps the most distinctive doctrine of Jehovah’s Witnesses, that Jesus Christ was enthroned invisibly as king in 1914. What is the basis for this doctrine? Does it rely on types and anti-types? Please consider the following video presentation. But before you watch the video, I encourage you to read Daniel 4:4-37 in your own copy of the Bible.

(Daniel 4:28) All of this befell King Neb·u·chad·nezʹzar.

Since nowhere in the Bible does it say that there is a secondary, antitypical fulfillment to Daniel’s prophecy beyond his day, it becomes unnecessary to search for a numerical formula to calculate the seven times as being a total of 2,520 years. Hence, it is impossible to use this scripture to prove that Jesus was enthroned as king in 1914. Taking away the type anti-type method of interpreting Bible passages also causes problems with other teachings unique to Jehovah’s Witnesses. This will be reviewed in a future article.
